Birchwood's Fall Cleanup Day Adds Electronics Recycling and Clothing Swap

Birchwood's twice-a-year neighborhood cleanup has always been a practical affair: grab a bag, pick up litter, tidy the common areas, and feel a little better about where you live. This fall, organizers are adding two new features that they hope will keep useful things out of landfills and give neighbors another reason to show up.

The first addition is an electronics recycling drop-off. Residents can bring old phones, laptops, tablets, cables, chargers, small appliances, and similar items to a designated spot near the community center. Volunteers will sort them and hand them off to a certified recycler that handles data destruction and material recovery. Organizers ask that people wipe their devices beforehand if possible, though the recycler will also handle secure data wiping.

The second addition is a free clothing swap. Neighbors can drop off clean, gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories in the days leading up to the event, then browse and take whatever they need on cleanup day. There's no charge and no limit. Anything left over will be donated to a local charity. Organizers say the swap is meant to be low-key and judgment-free, a way to refresh a wardrobe without spending money or adding to textile waste.

How the Day Will Work

The morning will start with a brief welcome and a quick safety talk, then teams will fan out across the neighborhood to pick up litter, clear storm drains, and tidy up planting beds. Gloves, bags, and grabbers will be provided, though volunteers are welcome to bring their own. Routes will be assigned based on how many people show up, and organizers will try to keep teams on streets they know.

Midday, everyone will regroup at the community center for a simple lunch. That's also when the electronics drop-off and clothing swap will be in full swing, so volunteers can browse after their routes. The swap will be set up in the main room, with tables sorted by category and size. A few mirrors will be available, and volunteers will be on hand to help sort and restock.

For families, there will be a kid-friendly cleanup route that stays close to the center and moves at a slower pace. Children are welcome to help with litter pickup, and there will be a craft table where they can turn small found items into art. Organizers ask that parents stay with their kids throughout the event.

Why It's Worth Showing Up

Cleanup days are easy to take for granted, but their impact adds up. Litter that gets picked up in fall won't clog storm drains in spring. Electronics that get recycled won't leach heavy metals in a landfill. Clothing that gets swapped gets a second life instead of being thrown away. And neighbors who spend a morning working side by side tend to look out for each other long after the bags are tied.

Organizers say they're always looking for more volunteers, especially people willing to help with setup, sorting, and the lunch line. If you have a truck or a trailer and can help transport collected items, that's especially useful. And if you can't make the whole morning, even an hour helps.

To take part, just show up at the community center on the morning of the event. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and if you have clothing to swap, drop it off early. Whether you come for the cleanup, the recycling, the clothing swap, or all three, you'll be part of something that makes Birchwood a little cleaner and a little more connected.
