Birchwood Neighbors Launch Tool-Sharing Library to Cut Costs and Clutter

How many times have you needed a ladder for one afternoon, or a power drill for a single project, and ended up buying something you'll use once a year? A group of Birchwood neighbors has been asking that question, and their answer is now up and running: a community tool library where residents can borrow instead of buy.

The library operates out of a corner of the community center's storage room, which volunteers have cleaned, shelved, and organized over the past few months. Members can browse a catalog, reserve a tool, and pick it up during set hours. Loans run for a week at a time, with the option to renew if no one else is waiting. There's no rental fee, though a small annual membership contribution is suggested to help cover maintenance and replacement.

What's on the Shelves

The inventory started with donations from neighbors who had duplicates or rarely used items sitting in garages and basements. Early offerings include cordless drills, a circular saw, a jigsaw, sanders, a stud finder, several ladders in different sizes, a wheelbarrow, shovels, rakes, a hedge trimmer, a pressure washer, and a small tile cutter. There's also a growing collection of specialty items, like a carpet cleaner, a drain snake, and a set of clamps that one woodworker donated after upgrading.

Volunteers say the catalog will grow based on what people actually borrow. If a particular tool is consistently reserved, they'll try to add a second one. If something sits untouched for months, they may retire it to make room. Members are encouraged to suggest additions, and there's a wish list posted near the checkout table.

Safety and upkeep are taken seriously. Every power tool is checked before it goes out and when it comes back, and volunteers have put together a short orientation for first-time borrowers. A simple sign-out sheet tracks who has what, and a small repair station in the corner handles routine maintenance like sharpening blades and replacing worn cords.

More Than Just Tools

Organizers say the project is about more than saving money, though that's a real benefit. It's also about reducing waste, freeing up garage space, and building relationships. When you borrow a tool from a neighbor, you're more likely to ask for advice, and when you return it, you're more likely to strike up a conversation. Several volunteers said the best part so far has been watching strangers become acquaintances over a shared ladder.

The library is also planning occasional skill-sharing sessions. Ideas include a basic home repair workshop, a garden tool maintenance demo, and a session on safely using a circular saw. Nothing is scheduled yet, but volunteers are collecting interest from members who'd like to teach or attend.

If you'd like to join, stop by during open hours to sign up and get a tour. If you have tools you no longer need, donations are welcome, especially items in good working condition. And if you'd like to help run the library, volunteers are needed for check-in shifts, maintenance, and catalog updates. It's a small project with a simple premise: share what you have, borrow what you need, and get to know the people around you in the process.
